Our travels take us back to earlier times and to the people and places our shaped our history and our culture. This program contains five separate segments:
JAMESTOWN: Starting in 1606 in England, it took four months for three ships--replicas of which are shown on the cover--to cross the Atlantic. The people aboard were part of a venture to form a colony in Virginia, which became the first permanent settlement in 1609.
DODGE CITY: The Old West comes to life every day in this Kansas town at the Boot Hill Museum. Dodge became a boomtown in the 1870s because it was the point where the cattle drives from Texas met the railroad.
FOLLOWING BOONE: Daniel Boone’s story as a frontiersman is told at a park bearing his name in North Carolina as well as as Cumberland Gap, the place where he directed settlers to cross the Cumberland Mountains. We also visit a fort where he was part of an epic battle.
SOUTHWEST TRAIL: In the Civil War era, Washington, Arkansas was a busy place. It was an important stop on the Southwest Trail, with people like James Bowie, Sam Houston and Davy Crockett passing through. The Bowie knife was forged there.
MACKINAC ISLAND: Horse-drawn conveyances are everywhere on Mackinac Island in Michigan because motorized vehicles are banned. The island’s setting, history and charm make it a popular destination for visitors who like to look back in time.
